Packaging designs are altering to become more in line with consumer buying behaviour as the economic downturn is still having a significant effect. 

Buying behaviour of consumers has changed dramatically over the last few years and customers are now far more selective in their purchasing. There has been a great shift in the number of people opting for the cheaper alternative rather than paying more for perceived luxury. With the dramatic increase in those opting for non-brands or cheaper brands instead of paying slightly more for the leading branded goods, companies have begun to adapt their packaging to reflect this.

Brands are aware that cheaper alternatives could be taking over and therefore need to come up with a way to differentiate themselves from others. The best way in which they can do this is through their packaging. However, in order to achieve this, they must change their packaging in such a dramatic way to help them stand out on the shelf above the own brands.

Companies are now looking for new and innovative ways to package their products to reflect the quality of the product inside. For example, if you were comparing two very similar electrical products, you may decipher that the less impressive packaging reflects a lower quality product, and vice versa.
