Coca-Cola has made a huge commitment to helping the environment by making a promise to recycle all PET clear plastic including non-Coke brands at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Along with several other commitments, The Coca-Cola company has released plans to recycle all the white PET plastic waste generated from the Olympic Games to attempt to make the games the most sustainable they have ever been. They are working in partnership with SITA UK to roll out the plans, which include a new recycling centre called Continuum which has been developed as a joint venture with Eco-Plastics.
This large commitment is projected to reduce the amount of waste produced by the Olympic games by around a fifth. The recycled plastic will then be used to make over 80 million new Coca-Cola bottles just six weeks after the games have finished. The Coca-Cola Company is also working alongside WWF to ensure their commitments incorporate the environmental recommendations set out by WWF.
Other commitments include:
· Putting in over 260 new recycling bins across London and around the games to increase the amount of waste being recycled even further.
· Using 100% recyclable bottles for all Coke products which will contain up to 25% of recycled material.
· Using bottles which contain up to 22.5% plant based material to serve Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero.
