The on-going debate of plain-packaging cigarette packets is in the news again this month as major brands take it to high court in Australia.
Four major Cigarette brands have taken their challenge to high court as they bid to prevent the plain packaging rules coming into law in Britain and Australia. Australia is leading the way with plain packaging and has legislated for the new packets to be bought into retail in December of this year.
The proposed changes to the cigarette packets mean that they will be very plain in colour with no brand logo and simply the brand name written in a small typeface on the front. The rest of the packet will be covered with health warnings and eye-opening images of the damage caused by cigarettes.
The court case is being carefully followed throughout the world and the companies are claiming that these changes to packaging will remove intellectual property from the companies involved without compensation. The four brands bringing the case to court are British American Tobacco (BAT), Philip Morris, Imperial Tobacco and Japan Tobacco International.
Their argument states that they are a legal company selling a legal product; however the Australian Government feels very strongly about the changes and believe the changes are to protect the health of the public.
It is not yet known what the outcome of the case will be however it is sure to have a significant impact on companies across the world.
