Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has launched a facility which enables customers to recycle their Easter egg packaging. As reported in The Guardian, 50 stores across the UK will offer the special recycling bin. Each bin will allow customers to recycle all aspects of Easter egg packaging including the plastic, card and foil parts that can be tricky to get rid of.
It’s great to see the supermarket trying to help stop the massive amounts of packaging that ends up as landfill every year. Occasions like Christmas and Easter are seasons both notorious for being centred around brand messages conveyed through seasonal packaging.
Big brands every year issue seasonal packaging for their products that goes out of date very quickly as soon as the season in particular is over and done with.
Manufacturers have been trying to do their bit to lessen the amount of packaging that comes with chocolate eggs, but have now claimed to have reached a limit with the degree in which they can do this. Making it easier for people to dispose of packaging like hard plastic shells and foam will mean that the good work can continue, and seems like the logical next stage of the process.
As you know, we’re very focused on avoiding wastage wherever possible, offering our own range of bespoke packaging options. Our bespoke, cut to size packaging means that far less is wasted than if we cut packaging in anticipation of what would sell.
It’s for this reason that we applaud the initiative Sainsbury’s is taking with this.
