The effectiveness of traditional marketing is on the decline, encouraging marketers to move more towards an online strategy and recognise the importance of packaging.
Due to its proximity to the point of purchase, an innovative packaging solution can have a very positive effect on driving sales.
For example, innovations in digital printing allowed Coke to create a worldwide hype surrounding their ‘share a coke’ campaign where individual’s names were printed on the cans. They also coincided this campaign with tours to a number of cities throughout the UK, where individuals could submit their names and immediately receive a bottle of personalised Coca Cola with their name printed on it.
Elsewhere in the industry developments in bulk packaging has meant that savings can be passed on to customers, making processes for supermarkets more efficient. Discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl made significant growth in the market during the recession because of a greater sensitivity to price, but continue to grow their market share due to this innovative thinking.
They have focused on creating packaging that is ‘shelf ready’, reducing handling costs and cutting replenishment costs by up to 50%. As such, Aldi and Lidl are forecasted to continue to grow, and are expected to reach a market share of 10% in the UK over the next two years (Packaging News).
