Cardboard packaging is widely used by many organisations due to its low cost, easy storage and multitude of uses, keeping us cardboard box manufacturers busy. Although cardboard packaging is a renewable source of packaging, many companies have come under fire for using the popular product excessively.
B&Q has recently replaced the cardboard packaging it uses to transport kitchen products to their customer’s homes with a multi-trip packaging system called Longspaces. The popular UK DIY brand has claimed this will slash its annual cardboard packaging usage by a staggering 435 tonnes and cut costs by around £80,000 a year.
Superbrand Coca-Cola has also been experimenting with limiting their cardboard wastage with an initiative called Give It Back rack. This is a point of purchase display that is made from recycled Coke packaging and will sit in retail stores. The idea behind the concept is that retailers are asked to return the shelving units to Coca-Cola once they are taken off shop floors and Coca-Cola will recycle the units. What’s interesting is that the design of the units is not particularly sleek; they look very much recycled and rugged, with the corrugated cardboard edges clearly visible.
Many experts within the industry hope that the forward-thinking, sustainable efforts by these large brands will spur other organisations into considering what happens to their cardboard packaging at the end of its life and ways in which they can limit how much they use.
