2012 sees Nestle taking a significant step in reducing waste by producing 100% recyclable packaging for their Easter Eggs.
Nestle is one of the top confectionary companies in the UK, and their Easter Eggs are among the most popular; selling over 20 million each year. Their top brands include Smarties, Kit Kat and Aero.
On average, only 30% of an Easter egg box is actually chocolate and the other 70% is packaging to ensure it reaches the consumer in the best condition. With so many Easter eggs being produced each year, this equates to over 3000 tonnes of waste every year.
With Nestle, accounting for one in every four Easter eggs sold, they have managed to successfully replace the 48 tonnes of rigid plastic previously used with FSC approved cardboard. This is mainly among their mid-range eggs which now makes the new packaging 100% recyclable.
Liberal democrat MP Jo Swinson has been criticising confectionary companies for not doing enough to ensure packaging is more environmentally friendly; however praised Nestle on doing their bit for the industry.
In a study conducted on 11 major Easter egg brands, it was found that high-end Easter Eggs such as Baileys and Thornton’s provided the highest amount of non-recyclable packaging. Own brands such as Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s were also not favoured with much of their packaging being plastic.
It is hoped that this significant move forward will encourage other major brands such as Mars and Cadbury to follow suit and provide consumers with a completely recyclable parcel next Easter.
