Students from Leicester University are working towards discovering the key to biodegradable polystyrene. In order to do so the students need to genetically develop an organism that will break down the Polystyrene waste.
The group International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) must carry out experiments involving people of the local community, who are instructed to bury small pieces of Polystyrene in their gardens.
With the environment becoming an increasingly recognised issue in Britain today, we need to think about what we do with our waste.
The London 2012 Olympics are getting in on the act promising to promote recycling during the sport events, and Cardia Bioplastics has just launched their compostable bubble wrap. Councils are introducing households with separate food waste bins and recycling remains a key development, so the message to the public is certainly to help clean up their environment.
