Each year, packaging continues to push the boundaries through the use of new materials, styles or methods in order to reduce waste and create usable, efficient packaging for a number of products.
Next year appears to be no different: here are a few packaging innovations we are keeping an eye on in the coming year.
With Which’s recent survey, it’s clear to see that supermarkets are saturated with the same variations of packaging in very similar colours and shapes. Being unexpected and disruptive makes customers stop and engage with your product and packaging, grabbing their attention and giving them emotional satisfaction too (source: packagingnews.co.uk).
In a similar method, the ‘ooh ahh’ effect captures consumers’ attention. Kate Fischer of Sun Branding Solutions elaborates:
“This trend is all about giving customers a visually impressive product that captures their attention, changing their preconceptions of the product. This is achieved through the visual effect that happens in front of the customer from purchase, enticing the user to buy this product as they will enjoy an additional experience when they use it.”
All packaging is designed for three purposes: to house, protect and transport. Recently however, it seems as though designers are starting to think about the process after this, and are looking into multifunctional packaging that goes beyond these stages. For example, Hungarian restaurant and bar, Trafiq, has created hyper functional packaging in a bid to acquire more loyal customers.

The packaging has two functions, allowing the consumer to transport their food and acting as a recyclable plate – meaning less washing up and less damage to the environment.
Here at Wessex Packaging we’re also excited for the development of a new packaging idea of our own.
Our latest innovation offers a pioneering method for lining a carton with foam, offering high standards of protection and insulation at low costs as there is minimal wastage. We’re looking forward to seeing which new developments the packaging industry adopts in 2015.
