The Role Customer Satisfaction Plays In Packaging

An international study on how packaging affects customer satisfaction and purchasing behaviour has revealed that packaging is key to brand image, product trials and repeat purchases (MWV 2015).
 
The research involved over 5,000 consumers and discovered that:

  • Consumers are 10% more likely to purchase and use products frequently if they are happy with its packaging.
  • Customers who are satisfied with product packaging are 7% more likely to shop frequently, in-store and online.
  • Around 31% of customers find packaging impacts their product satisfaction.
  • More than a third of global consumers have purchased a product because the packaging made it safer.
  • Companies have a responsibility to ensure product safety, according to 90% of consumers.

The research showed that the packaging industry is heading in the right direction however consumers have still  identified gaps within the sector.
 
Respondents said the way to improve customer satisfaction is through innovative packaging, focusing on functionality and safety. The main areas for improvement were identified as:

  • how easy it is to reclose/reseal
  • how well it keeps the product fresh/effective
  • if it keeps the product safe
  • if it prevents spilling/breaking.
